Extension to the Neue Nationalgalerie

Berlin's Kulturforum still is a fragment of the original visionary plan to create a West-Berlin counterpart of the museum island. In particular the Neue Nationalgalerie by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is next to Hand Scharoun's Philharmonie a highlight of 20th century architecture in the middle of a collection of detached cultural buildings.

The extension of the Neue Nationalgalerie includes the yard of the van der Rohe building, but rotates it 90 degrees. The extension frames the remaining three sides such that the yard becomes the courtyard of the museum. The new three-level building yields more than 10.000 sqm of additional exhibition space.
